How I Understand the 3D Visualization Workflow
Notes on the people, stages, and handoffs I am learning about.As I work on larger projects, I keep noticing that the render is only one step. Reference has to be collected, drawings need preparation, the scene needs organization, and the work has to be reviewed before it is presented. I want to understand where my part comes from, who may use it next, and what I should be checking along the way.
Most of this understanding comes from college, my own projects, reading, and studying how professional work is presented. Writing it out gives me a practical list of skills and questions to take into the next project.
The stages I am studying
The question and the brief
Roles I am learning about: Client, project lead, producer, account or business-development team
What I think moves to the next stage: A brief that identifies the purpose, audience, scope, schedule, and what the final work needs to explain.
One thing I am learning is to ask what the image needs to do before I start modeling. Is it showing an idea, explaining a design, checking a space, or helping someone make a decision? If I cannot answer that yet, I probably need to ask more questions before I worry about how the render looks.
Research and source control
Roles I am learning about: Researcher, visualization artist, architect, engineer, CAD or BIM technician
What I think moves to the next stage: Plans, models, reference photos, surveys, specifications, source notes, and a list of unknowns.
I used to think gathering reference was mostly setup. Working on Chesterfield has shown me how much dates, units, revisions, and missing dimensions affect every choice that follows. I am learning to keep track of which information I trust and which parts still need to be checked.
CAD and BIM preparation
Roles I am learning about: CAD designer, BIM technician, architect, civil or structural designer, visualization technician
What I think moves to the next stage: Clean, scaled geometry and drawing information that can move into the visualization environment.
I am only beginning to understand how much cleanup and coordination can happen between a drawing and a 3D scene. In my own study, I am practicing how to preserve scale, orientation, layers, and the useful parts of a drawing without bringing in information that makes the Maya scene harder to manage.
3D modeling and scene assembly
Roles I am learning about: 3D modeler, environment artist, architectural visualization artist, technical artist
What I think moves to the next stage: A structured scene with the building, site, context, cameras, and reusable assets at the right level of detail.
On my own projects, I am finding that I do not need to model every possible detail. I need to build what the camera and the project call for, keep the scene understandable, and organize it so I can follow my own work when I return to it.
Materials and look development
Roles I am learning about: Material artist, look-development artist, visualization artist, texture artist
What I think moves to the next stage: Surfaces that communicate material, age, finish, scale, and design intent under the project lighting.
I am learning to look beyond Base Color and pay attention to Roughness, Normal, Specular, Metalness, Displacement, Opacity, and Emission when a material calls for them. My challenge is learning what each control contributes, keeping the texture scale believable, and knowing when a surface has enough detail.
Lighting, cameras, and rendering
Roles I am learning about: Lighting artist, visualization artist, photographer or art director, rendering specialist
What I think moves to the next stage: Views that direct attention, explain the space, and produce technically usable images.
I am learning how much the camera and lighting change what I notice in a scene. I like testing angles and comparing passes, but I also have more to learn about exposure, color management, sampling, render time, output resolution, and how an image holds up when I review it closely.
Compositing and presentation
Roles I am learning about: Compositor, retoucher, motion designer, graphic designer, visualization artist
What I think moves to the next stage: Finished stills, animations, diagrams, boards, interactive views, or proposal material.
I have less experience with compositing than I do with modeling and rendering. I understand that it can help balance an image, add context, and prepare the final presentation. I want to practice where it fits instead of treating a raw render as automatically finished.
Review, coordination, and revision
Roles I am learning about: Art director, project manager, client, architect or engineer, QA reviewer, the full production team
What I think moves to the next stage: Corrections, approvals, tracked revisions, and a final result that matches the latest information.
My own projects improve when I stop for review instead of waiting until the end. I am learning to keep versions straight, write down what changed, use feedback, and revise an approach when the reference shows that something is off.
Where I want to fit
I use “all-arounder” as a direction for my studies. I want enough range to follow a project from the first drawing through the final presentation and communicate with people in different disciplines. I enjoy the technical side of scale, CAD, scene organization, materials, and troubleshooting, and I also care about lighting, composition, and whether the final image explains the idea.
Right now I am studying broadly so I can see which parts connect and where I want to go deeper. Even when a final image is not where I want it yet, I can still improve the drawing setup, file organization, materials, review process, or the way I explain my decisions.
What I want to learn next
I want more experience with client constraints, team handoffs, BIM coordination, review cycles, production schedules, and the standards that experienced firms use every day. I am especially interested in seeing how a team keeps drawings, models, comments, and revisions organized as a project changes.
The Chesterfield Mall project gives me a place to practice with incomplete information, organize a larger scene, use CAD as part of a 3D study, document my decisions, and work through the next question when the answer is not obvious.
